Do I need to replace my old silver fillings with tooth coloured fillings?

While a “silver” or Amalgam filling is in good condition, with no chips or gaps between the filling and the natural tooth it is safe and can stay and does not need to be replaced. Once the filling starts to show wear or in the unfortunate instance were part of it breaks the dentist will replace it and, in most instances, this will be with a tooth coloured filling. If you are considering changing to a tooth coloured filling for aesthetic reasons this is something that is an option in most cases and can be discussed with the dentist.

How long do tooth coloured fillings last?

This is a hard question to answer. While many will last 20 years this will depend on many factors such as how much natural tooth structure is remaining, the force and pressure of the bite, the oral hygiene and other health implications of the patient.

What is a Tooth Coloured Filling made of?

Tooth coloured filling material is made of a blend or a composite of plastic resins and silica fillers. Some have additional additives such as slow-release fluoride. The combination of materials helps to mimic the strength and structure of a natural tooth.
